Bell Hill neighborhood in Worcester, Massachusetts

Our Story

Rooted in Community.
Built with Purpose.

How It Began

A church with deep roots in the neighborhood.

Journey Community Church has been present in Worcester's Bell Hill neighborhood for years — worshipping, serving, and walking alongside the people who call this community home. Over time, it became clear that food insecurity was one of the most pressing and persistent challenges facing our neighbors at Plumley Village Apartments and throughout the surrounding area.

The vision for the Plumley Village Food Pantry grew out of that presence — not as a charity handed down from the outside, but as a community-owned response to a community-identified need. We believe that the people closest to the problem are also closest to the solution.

Journey Community Outreach, Inc. was formed to carry this vision forward — a separate nonprofit entity with the organizational capacity to build, operate, and sustain a food pantry that truly serves Plumley Village Apartments and the Bell Hill neighborhood with dignity and excellence.

What We Stand For

Our core values.

These are not just words on a wall — they are the living commitments that shape how we serve, how we lead, and how we show up for our neighbors every day.

01

Love

We celebrate that we are loved by a good and compassionate God, and we allow that truth to shape how we see and serve others. Our outreach is an expression of this love, lived out through service, solidarity, and genuine care, as we walk alongside those we serve with humility, respect, and compassion.

02

Worship

We remain grounded in faith, seeking wisdom, humility, and prayerful discernment as we lead and serve. We recognize that the work of community service is worship, and through this work we honor God by serving others with compassion.

03

Community

We value collaboration, cultural humility, and the voices of those we serve, recognizing that meaningful work is strongest when it is shaped by the people it impacts. We believe strong partnerships and diverse perspectives strengthen our impact, deepen our understanding, and allow us to serve more effectively and responsibly within the community.

04

Generosity

We are committed to extending care and generosity without judgment, recognizing that poverty and lack of resources are not moral failings. We believe every person deserves dignity, equitable access to resources, and compassionate support. We firmly believe that systematic barriers and inequities exist. We have a mandate to community aid because everything that has been given to us is God's.

05

Service with Dignity

We reflect the love of Christ through respectful, thoughtful outreach in all that we do, allowing our actions and presence to be guided by compassion and purpose. We serve with intention and care, taking time to listen, respond thoughtfully, and meet people where they are, always honoring the dignity and inherent worth of every individual we encounter.

06

Justice and Inclusion

We see justice as central to our faith and are committed to fairness, non-discrimination, and creating welcoming spaces where all people are treated with compassion and respect, regardless of background or circumstance. We are committed to a larger movement for justice in our community.

Partnership between Journey Community Outreach and Schochet Companies
Key Partnership

A landmark partnership with Schochet Companies.

One of the most significant milestones in our journey has been our partnership with Schochet Companies, a leading affordable housing developer and property management firm with deep roots in the Greater Boston and Worcester region.

Schochet Companies manages Plumley Village Apartments — the affordable housing community at 16 Laurel Street in Worcester's Bell Hill neighborhood. Their commitment to the well-being of their residents goes beyond housing, and their partnership with Journey Community Outreach reflects a shared belief that stable, thriving communities require access to nutritious food.

Through this partnership, we have secured dedicated space within Plumley Village Apartments to house the food pantry — a critical step toward making our vision a permanent, sustainable reality for residents and the broader Bell Hill community.
